This year major changes have been made in the exam pattern of the test. These changes are as follow:

  • Duration increased by 10 minutes, i.e. 03 hours will be allotted now

  • A section has been added making the total of sections be 3.

  • Introduction of descriptive questions in each section

  • Return of sectional constraints, 60 minutes each will be given to attempt a section

  • Use of a basic online calculator for computations allowed

The test will be held on a single day and in two sessions. It will be conducted in online mode only. A total of 100 questions will be asked, divided into 3 sections. Each section will have a mix of both, objective type and descriptive questions.

Marking Scheme:

There are 2 kinds of scoring involved in the entrance exam,

  1. Raw score – It is calculated for each section on the basis of a number of questions a candidate has answered correctly, incorrectly or has omitted (not answered).

    • For each correct answer: +3 points

    • For each incorrect answer: -1 point

    • For not answering any question: No point

*No negative marking is applicable for descriptive questions.

  1. Scaled score – The raw scores are then adjusted through a process called “equating”. These equated raw scores are then placed over a common scale for ensuring the appropriate interpretation of the final score. Such a final score is called as scaled score.

Key Points:

  • A high score in one section does not guarantee a high or similar score in another section too. As the 3 sections involved in the test evaluate distinct sets of knowledge and skills of the appearing candidates, thus the scores do not correlate across the 3 sections.

  • Percentile rankings are provided for each section as well as for the overall exam score. On the basis of these overall CAT scores only, MBA admissions are allotted at IIMs and other best management institutions in India.
